POSITION: Supervisor of Elementary and Secondary Social Studies
LOCATION: Brooks Administration Building (BOE)
POSITION SUMMARY: Supervises and provides leadership in the development and implementation of the elementary and secondary social studies program. Observes, evaluates and collaborates with school-based administrators in the evaluation of teachers. Acts as a resource for teachers in addressing the needs of all learners in achieving academic progress and success. Develops, creates and curates curriculum that is aligned to content standards, incorporates best instructional and assessment practices that support strong Tier 1 universal instruction. Collaboratively develops and implements appropriate professional learning that supports the implementation of the curriculum as intended and instruction that is culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable. Collaborates with all general and special education instructional directors, supervisors, coordinators, and specialists to implement the social studies program in alignment with the Blueprint for Maryland’s Schools Implementation Plan and the Calvert County Public Schools Strategic Plan.
REPORTS TO: Director of System and Instructional Performance
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:
- Holds or is immediately eligible for a Maryland Administrator I endorsement.
- Holds a Master's Degree with coursework in Curriculum and Instruction.
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a social studies teacher.
- Successful experience as a school-based administrator preferred.
- Experience in program evaluation, curriculum development, assessment writing, data analysis, and professional development preferred.
- Experience in providing coaching, professional development, mentoring, or other leadership roles.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions. At the time of employment, the candidate must have:
- Knowledge of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS), PK-12 social studies curriculum, curriculum design and development, and assessment design.
- Knowledge of Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and research-based strategies and evidence-based practices to improve teacher practice.
- Knowledge of Universal Screeners and the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment (MCAP) program.
- Knowledge of current best practice, data analysis, curricula, instruction, assessment, professional development, and multi-tiered system of supports.
- Knowledge of best practices for developing curricular materials that support the diverse learning needs of students.
- Evidence of broad reading in professional literature related to social studies, literacy, instructional strategies, assessments, and adult learning styles.
- Knowledge of sound instructional practice that increases the student experience such as culturally responsive instruction, Universal Design for Learning, and Inclusive Practices.
- Knowledge of instructional technology that enhances student learning, including Schoology, and knowledge of classroom use of instructional technology for student achievement.
- Knowledge of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.
- A deep understanding of Danielson’s Framework for Teaching.
- Understanding and ability to maintain rapport with people from all identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of equity including the ability to advocate for marginalized students.
- Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, parents, and community members.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize and promote equitable, culturally responsive practices in all facets of education and understands the impact on instruction and school/district climate.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations including students, teachers, staff, central office personnel including supervisors, specialists and coordinators, parents and community partners both orally and in written form.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:
- Prepares recommendations for the Director of System and Instructional Performance regarding the implementation of the Social Studies program.
- Coordinates vertical articulation of the Social Studies program leading to the development of students that are college, career and citizenship ready.
- Coordinates CCPS curricula, assessments, and data analysis for local and state mandated assessments.
- Coordinates text and software adoption consistent with effective Social Studies programming and county guidelines.
- Coordinates the One Room School House field trip, Old Wallville School program, 5th Grade Financial Literacy, Mock Trial, Calvert Association of Student Councils, and Criminal Justice programs.
- Conducts the annual Student Member of the Board of Education election.
- Provides leadership to staff in elementary and secondary social studies curriculum including, but not limited to curriculum design, instructional resources development, and implementation of appropriate content areas assessments and organization of the CCPS curriculum management system.
- Provides systemic supervision for High School Government Core Leads.
- Observes and evaluates teachers and provides supervision for the Social Studies Learning Specialist.
- Observes the class performance of teachers and confers and consults with them regarding their performance, teaching ability, addressing of student needs, and their own professional development.
- Works with school-based administrators in the observation, rating, and evaluation of social studies teachers.
- Works with other instructional staff to design and implement instructional programming to assure student performance and adherence to the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards in elementary and secondary Social Studies.
- Works collaboratively with elementary and secondary content area supervisors to infuse reading, writing, research, and speaking and listening strategies into the implementation of the Social Studies program.
- Works collaboratively with the Department of Instruction and Special Education to design and implement instructional programming to assure student performance and adherence to the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.
- Confers regularly with Department of Special Education staff to ensure appropriate achievement for all students in the area of Social Studies.
- Plans and implements professional development and content area workshops for elementary and secondary Social Studies teachers.
- Represents Calvert County at regional and state meetings addressing the implementation of effective social studies programming.
- Keeps informed of the latest trends and research in addressing student learning deficiencies and acceleration in the area of Social Studies.
- Manages critical content for Social Studies student learning objectives.
- Develops social studies County Course Exams for middle and high school social studies, manages these exams in Performance Matters, and analyzes data as needed.

- Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director of System and Instructional Performance.
- Is available to work flexible hours at the Director of System and Instructional Performance’s request.
- Is available to various student, teacher, and community groups for education-related purposes beyond the regular workday.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the salary schedule for Administrators and Supervisors. If chosen for this position, the candidate must enroll in direct deposit. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.
